Article: Substitute Advocates

What authority enables one advocate appear on behalf on another in proceedings before a court, where the former has not been specifically authorised to appear by the client? Juniors, associates, and ‘brother lawyers’ appear on behalf of each other on a daily basis, seeking dates or adjournments and occasionally addressing arguments in court.
