WiFi And Computer
Further to the notice dated 8 October 2008, members are informed that the Wireless Internet security settings have now been completely changed. The network is presently not accessible.
Members will have access to the network again from Wednesday, 15 October 2008. Those who wish to use the facility must submit a form, with an undertaking not to disclose the access information to non-members. Forms will be available with the staff and online by Tuesday, 14 October 2008. On submitting the form, the member will be given the access codes and an instruction sheet for connecting to the network.
The following security measures are now in place:
- The network cannot be automatically detected any longer (the ”broadcast“ feature is disabled
- The router login and password have been changed
- The network name has been changed
- The security encryption of the password is now of a considerably higher strength
- WiFi access will now be available only from 10:30 am to 5:45 pm Monday through Friday. Beyond those times, the WiFi is set to auto-disable
- The router cannot be accessed over the wireless, but only from the Association computer which is connected via a LAN cable.
Members’ use of the computer is also now discontinued. The inconvenience is regretted, but there is no way to maintain security of the wireless network without also restricting access to the Association computer.
The instruction sheet is basic and should work with all machines running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Macs. There are likely to be issues with IBM’s ThinkVantage application software. The instruction sheet does not cover that, or a similar non-standard situation. The instruction sheet will not be available online (obviously).
Beyond the instruction sheet, the Association cannot offer personalized technical assistance with connecting to the network. Please do not demand help from the Association staff. The immediately previous two Honorary Secretaries, on the other hand, are susceptible to flattery and, on being plied with endless cups of coffee, should prove amenable.
