Two days before the Court opened after the summer recess, on June 6, the Official Polo Team of the Bombay Bar Association (actually, the only team, but who’s counting?) drubbed the Polo Club de Chantilly team at Chantilly, France, 6–1½.
The Bombay Bar Association is the only law association in the country, and perhaps the world, to have an official polo team.
Riding borrowed polo ponies, each member of the BBA Team — Mr Dinyar Madon (captain), Mr Shyam Mehta, Mr Rahul Dwarkadas, and Mr Srinivas Bobde — scored goals. Mr Madon and Mr Mehta scored twice. Mr Dwarkadas, too, attempted a second goal. Unfortunately, his shot crossed the goal line seconds after the final bell of the first chukker and was disallowed. Unsurprisingly, Mr Dwarkadas’s (predictably strident) objections were overruled.
Given a half-goal handicap, Team Chantilly finally scored but a solitary goal. With its players scoring at will, the BBA team won by 6 goals to 1½, thus establishing that, between the two countries, Singh is king. Mr Madon was conferred the sobriquet of “Gunga Dinyar” for the magic he wrought on the field, while Mr Rahul Dwarkadas was dubbed “Le Big Mac” for reasons best left alone. Mr Mehta and Mr Bobde left before the nicknaming ceremony with their prize dinnerware.
Witnesses claim that a thoroughly scurrilous video recording of Mr Rahul Dwarkadas’s between-chukkers comments was made by his younger brother, Mr Kunal Dwarkadas. The contents of this video recording are alleged to be explosive. The videotape is believed to have been destroyed or removed beyond local jurisdiction. The matter is being investigated by the Mahalaxmi Railway Station superintendent. Our President, Mr Rohit Kapadia, will lead a 20-member task force to Patagonia later in December.
Mr Janak Dwarkadas, father of Messrs Rahul and Kunal Dwarkadas, was unavailable for comment.
There are no plans for a rematch.
