Lecture On International Arbitration

On Tuesday, November 7, 2006, Lord Slynn of Hadley and Khawar Querishi, QC, will speak on “International Arbitration: What makes a good arbitrator and effective counsel”.

The lecture will be held at 5:15 pm in the Association Common Room. All temporary and permanent members (including those who have applied for temporary membership) are cordially invited to the lecture. Refreshments will be served.

Lord Gordon SlynnLord Gordon Slynn, Baron Slynn of Hadley (born 17 February 1930), formerly Sir Gordon Slynn, is a senior British lawyer, specialising in European and International Law.

Lord Slynn practiced at the Bar, including a period as Junior Counsel to the Treasury and as Queen’s Counsel, before becoming High Court Judge and President of the Employment Appeals Tribunal. He was appointed an Advocate General at the European Court of Justice in 1981 and a Judge of that Court in 1988. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1992 as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary until 2002, and sat as a Lord of Appeal until 2005. He later became life peer as Baron Slynn of Hadley, of Eggington in the County of Bedfordshire. He now sits as an arbitrator. From 2001 to 2006 he sits as President of the Court of Appeal of Solomon Islands. Since 1988 he has been Chairman of the Executive Council of the International Law Association and he was Prior of England and the Islands of the Order of St. John from October 1999 until 2004. He is life President of the Lord Slynn of Hadley European Law Foundation.

Lord Slynn of Hadley is a supporter of moot courts. He has written a foreword to the book “How to Moot: a Student Guide to Mooting” and has sat as a judge in the Central and East European Moot Court.

Lord Slynn of Hadley is an honorary member of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society at the University of Virginia.

Khawar QureshiKhawar Qureshi, QC specializes in Commercial law and International Arbitration. He is a Visiting Professor in Commercial Law at the University of London. He has previously been appointed Junior Counsel to the Crown ‘A’ Panel and SFO Panel Counsel. His main areas of expertise include Commercial Law (Aviation, Banking, Commercial Contracts, Sale of Goods), International arbitration (ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, Arbitration Act 1996), Public International Law (State and Diplomatic Immunity, Treaty drafting and interpretation, negotiation, Bi-Lateral Investment Treaty claims), Public Law/Constitutional Law (Judicial Review, ECHR/Human Rights Act 1998 matters, advising on draft legislation, Mutual Legal Assistance, Extradition). He was also one of three Junior Counsel nominated for International Arbitration Junior of the Year 2005.
