TRIBUTE TO LATE J.F. SETHNA, LATE FARIDA SIKANDER, LATE N.N. SURATI & LATE D.P. HEGDE

MR MS SANGHAVI
President, Bombay Bar Association

Addressing the House of 69 members who attended the meeting, Mr Sanghavi said that all four members were regulars at the Bar Association. Jehangir Sethna was that most mild manered and gentle of men, quiet and hard working. Farida Sikander was an old friend of many years. “Mr Hegde was a part of the lobby where I sit,” Mr Sanghavi said, “and for many years we would come up for a cup of coffee at midday before lunching together.” He was a government pleader and an astute lawyer with a clear mind. Mr Hegde was like family. So, too, Mr Surati who was an active and regular member. Mr Sanghavi extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

MR IM CHAGLA
Senior Advocate

“It is not easy to bear the loss of any of these four members,” said Mr I M Chagla. “I knew Surati from the Association. Hegde was, for more years than I can remember, my neighbour at lunch. And Farida I knew since she joined the Bar.” Jehangir joined the Chambers of Marzban Mistry while Mr Chagla was a junior to Mr KH Bhabha. Jehangir’s father was a professor of law and the son followed in his father’s academic footsteps. He went to Harvard and later co-authored a treatise on the Companies Act. From his youth he was a weight-lifter and was ever a gentle giant with never a rude or unkind word. He was a complete family man and not a day passed when he didn’t call home at least once.

MR OZA
Advocate

“NN Surati was a personal friend.” Mr Oza recalled him as hardworking and honest and a voracious reader. He described himself as a jack of all trades and master of none. He established himself after a struggle but finally did well at the Bar and had a good practice.
